Canadians and the Green Card Lottery
While there is a relatively low rate of immigration from Canada to the US, there
are still many Canadians that are interested in moving to the United States in order
to pursue a career. Some think a work visa is their only option. However, the
green card lottery brings more options to the table and allows many
people to immigrate to the United States and live and work in the country.
Those who are interested in the DV
visa lottery need to understand the process, as well as the things that
will get them disqualified from receiving a green card. First, the green card
lottery was set up in order to bring in more immigrants from countries that do
not typically immigrate to the US. The goal is to provide a more diverse nation
in the United States by welcoming citizens of other countries to live and work
in the USA. Because of that, only certain countries are eligible to apply to the
green card lottery. Generally, Canada is not one such country.
Is there no other way for Canadians to apply?
Note that in some cases, the Green Card Lottery allows Canadians to apply:
- Canadians - citizens or residents - whose their birth place is not Canada and is an eligible country - The DV lottery eligibility is based on country of birth and not current residency / citizenship.
- Canadians whose their spouse was born in one of the eligible countries may apply (under the spouse name).
Canadians can also apply if their parents did not live in Canada at the time of
their birth (the applicant's birth - not the parents) and neither of them was born in an ineligible country (such as Canada).
If you are one of these two groups, apply to the green card lottery here:
In other cases, Canadians that are interested in the green card lottery can not apply and those who want to get a Green Card should take one of the other available paths of US immigration (Family, Work, Investment etc.). One thing to remember, the list of DV lottery eligible countries changes every year, based on the number of immigrants from each country on the last five years. This means that there is always a chance that your country will be eligible on the next DV lottery.
