Common Problems with Green Card Lottery Applications that Lead to Rejection

This bulletin is a summary of the various programs that are associated with Green Card Lottery Applications that automatically get them rejected. It is very important to make sure that you read all instructions carefully before you start your application. This is a necessary step to making sure you include all that you need to include.

1. Many applications are rejected because people do not pay attention to the photo requirements. For Green Card Lottery 2010 the picture size must be 600x600 pixels. This means that you must have your computer create a photo of you and anyone else in your family that is only as big as this measurement. Anything bigger or smaller will be rejected. Check the instructions for more information on the photo requirements here: http://www.usagc.org/photoinstructions.aspx

2. An application from a country that is not on the list of eligible countries will be automatically rejected. The law states that any country that has sent over 50,000 people into the United States within the last 5 years is ineligible. A list of the eligible and non eligible countries can be found here : requirements

3. Some applications apply that do not have the education or the work requirement. These are very strict and the Department of State will not look at applications that are almost correct in this requirement. You either have the requirement or you do not.

4. Some applications have the work requirement but their occupations were at a level 2 or 3 on the O*Net Occupational Database. The law states that the occupation must be a level 4-6 and this can easily be checked by going to the website here: http://online.onetcenter.org/. You can check on your job before you fill out the application.

5. If you do not fill out all of the information requested the form will automatically be rejected. The Department of State is very strict in the questions they ask and all applicants are expected to comply with the regulations.

6. Applications are sometimes submitted after the deadline. For the 2010 Green Card Lottery the applications must be online no later than Noon EST on December 1, 2008. Any applications sent after Noon will be automatically rejected.

7. Failure to follow all directions could mean that your application is rejected. It is suggested that you read the instructions ahead of time so you have everything you need at your finger tips when making your online application.

8. Submitting more than one application in any year will result in rejection of your application. The law states that you can only apply once each year. NOTE: Some fraudulent websites will submit your application more than once which will result in an automatic rejection of your application. There is no recourse if this happens.
