Watch Out For Green Card Lottery Scams
This bulletin is a summary of the various Green
Card Lottery scams that new immigrants should be aware of that are
offered by various businesses. These are important because listening to these
scams can make you lose money and stop you form entering the program. According
to both the U.S. State Department and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) there
are fraudulent practices by some businesses around the Green Card Lottery.
New immigrants need to know that applications are ONLY available online. There
is no other way to apply!
1. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns new immigrants of several scams
that are related to the Green Card Lottery. These are done by both businesses
and attorneys (Green Card Lottery updates):.
They say they are working or consultants to the United States Government --
they are not. Only the U.S. State Department issues visas (green cards).
They have a special entry form for you to use that will make your chances
greater -- the green card lottery can only be applied for online.
They have never had an application rejected that their company sent in -- the
lottery is a random drawing so some applications will be rejected since only
50,000 applications are accepted and many more are sent in.
2. People that come from the "disqualified" countries can still get in -- this
is not true.
3. Some companies will tell you that in order to get into a better position,
they will send in several entries for you. This automatically disqualifies you
because the rules state that only one application can be put in per person..
4. Some companies may try to get you to pay large amounts of money after you
have won the lottery to complete the process -- once you are notified by the
Department of State that you won a visa (green card) the letter will tell you
if there are any requirements that you need to complete. TO AVOID FRAUD Do not
fall for those websites that say they will give you visas (green cards) or
other documents of residency or government travel online. You will always have
to apply for green cards, passports or other requirements in person and it must
be in front of an officer of the United States government. Be very careful
about where you send your personal information in the form of documents to
because you do not know how they will be used. This could be a way for the
business to steal your identity.
