What is a green card and how can you get one?

A green card is the United States of America's official permanent resident card that allows you to reside in the US on a permanent basis and is attainable by various ways. The official name of the green card is "A United States Permanent Resident Card" but it's more famous as green card - the original color of the original card - which is also the color nowadays (since 2010). With a green card, you are able to live, work and study in the USA legally as a lawful resident.

The most common ways of obtaining an American green card and a USA lawful resident status are the following:

Immigration through (and) Sponsorship by a family member
Immigration through employment - with a Sponsorship by an American employer
Green card lottery ( - the diversity visa)
Immigration through investment

There are also green cards awarded to people with refugee or asylum seeking status. Each way, requires a different procedure and will also be affected if you currently live in the United States. When entering the United States without a green card, foreigners will need to arrange for a temporary visa or a visa waiver. The visa waiver program allows foreign nationals of 36 chosen countries to visit the US on a short term basis of up to 90 days, for tourism or business purposes.

There are a few differences between a green card holder (USA resident) and a US citizen; a citizen also has the right to vote and be elected, receive certain government benefits, work for the federal government and can never be deported. The easiest ways to obtain a green card (as stated above) are via the green card lottery, marrying a US citizen or having an employer sponsor you. Other ways include investing large sums of money into the USA economy ($500,000-$1,000,000), which is limited to a very small percentage of people wanting to acquire a green card.
